All our trees will be for sale by height or by caliper. In our stores, height is used for evergreen trees, whereas caliper is used for deciduous trees.

A caliper is an instrument used for measuring a tree's trunk. In most cases, the larger the trunk, the larger/taller the tree. By calculating the tree's caliper, you can determine if the tree has the suitable dimensions for the goals you want to accomplish.

Tree calipers can be made of wood, metal or plastic. They traditionally have two arms, one fixed and one sliding, and have measurement markings. With the arms around the trunk, this tool can tell you the size of the tree's trunk by caliper. You can then determine the height of the tree, depending on the kind of tree.

For an example, here are approximate measurements for trees. Trees sizes and heights will vary by variety:

Typical Tree Sizes for Shade Trees

2 inch caliper approximately 8-10 feet tall
2.5 inch caliper approximately 10-12 feet tall
3 inch caliper approximately 12-14 feet tall
3.5 inch caliper approximately 14+ feet tall
